What’s Growing!

We harvested the sunchokes last weekend and wow! I was not prepared to pull up so many. We had more than 2 5-gallon buckets full and there are lots left to take home if you can stop by during this week’s garden days. I planted only 2 tubers for next year so we will get a more reasonable amount. The parsnips were also beautiful! The biggest root was over 2 feet long and almost 3 inches wide!

There are a few options in the garden still – some young cilantro and dill plants that have self seeded, the parsley is still looking beautiful, and of course, all the greens and brassicas. The peas will not live through a hard frost, so I suggest that you try the pea shoots and pea tendrils. The entire pea plant is edible, including the flowers! (A reminder to leave all the new herbs in the perennial bed H so they can establish roots before they freeze. Thank you!)

This week I am focusing on organizing the shed to fit everything for the winter. The trellises and signs all take up a lot of space and it becomes a fun tetris game to get it all in. The following week will be the final week in the garden as we clean up leaves and spread more compost. Then we will take a nice long break until it is time to prune in early spring!

A huge thank you to all the volunteers who have made this season so successful! To all of you who watered and helped the plants thrive in the heat, to all of you who came to plant and harvest, to Shirley who gave the shed a much needed cleaning, to Andrew who upgraded the compost bins, to Laura who literally pulled all the weeds on her own! And of course, to our committee who has worked to make the garden a continued success!
